ASTRA, the Spartanburg Day School girls' service organization, presented a check totaling $15,772.90 to local nonprofit globalbike this morning. The donation was the culmination of a months-long campaign tied to the club's annual 5K fundraiser, held in March.
From raffles to fundraisers at local restaurants to the 5K itself, ASTRA members worked together to make the sixth annual event a success. Each year, a local nonprofit dedicated to serving others is selected as the recipient of the club's efforts.
"It is always a great feeling when we present the check to the beneficiary, and we see how happy and appreciative they are," said junior Kathleen Babb. "Not only do we experience this during the check presentation, but every time ASTRA girls serve in the community. We feel that we have made an impact on someone's life no matter the tasks."
Globalbike is a not-for-profit organization that uses the transformative power of bicycles to connect women and girls in rural Tanzania with the life-saving resources they need to prosper sustainably. Founder Curt McPhail accepted the check on behalf of globalbike, saying, "This is such an amazing legacy for what you do to allow us to do what we do in Tanzania. This will go so far."
