Student Support
Our goal at the Spartanburg Day School is for every student to develop the tools they need to succeed in the classroom, in college and beyond.
Our small class sizes allow teachers to focus on our students as individuals. If a student needs assistance beyond the classroom, there are a number of programs available to provide them with the necessary support, through our VISTAS program. (Varied Instructional Strategies for Teaching All Students)
Available Services
- The Aftercare Program offers daily study halls after school for 1st through 8th graders. Students complete homework assignments in a supervised setting, with access to the school’s computer labs and school library.
- Organizational tutorials, grouped by age level, are also held daily after school for 1st through 8th graders. Parents decide how often the student will attend. These tutorials assist students with study habits, time management and daily homework assignments.
- One-on-one tutorials by subject matter (organizational skills or classroom subjects) are available throughout the school day and after school for Middle and Upper School students.
- The Learning Center offers small group and individual tutorials during the summer months.
- Consultations with Dr. Bev Whitmire, Director of the Learning Lab and Learning Center, regarding individual Spartanburg Day School students are available by appointment.
The Learning Center
The Learning Center, established in 1998, offers individualized instruction for SDS students in 4 year-old kindergarten through fourth grade. Improved academic skills and enhanced self-esteem are the hallmarks of this program. Students attend the Learning Center during the school day for instruction in reading, mathematics and writing skills, as needed. They are fully integrated into the activities of their classrooms. Our certified teaching professionals customize instruction to meet the learning style of each student. Lower School teachers and the Learning Center staff work closely together to assure that each student is successful in the classroom.
The Learning Lab
Opened in the fall of 2004, the Learning Lab extends the services of the Learning Center to the Middle School level. Learning Lab students benefit from instruction tailored to their specific educational needs. A highly skilled, certified teacher provides instruction throughout the school day in a positive, supportive setting. The students participate to the fullest extent possible in the Middle School classes, and they are also able to take full advantage of all Middle School activities. Individualized instruction is also offered in subject area classes (Math, English, History, and Science).
Student Benefits
The Learning Center and Learning Lab are separate classrooms within our Lower and Middle School divisions. Designed for student success, these classrooms use proven techniques and integrated technology to best serve students with diagnosed learning differences.
Learning Center and Learning Lab scheduling is flexible, so that students can participate in field trips, band, sports, arts and classroom activities for their grade level.
Student Support Services, the Learning Center and the Learning Lab provide students with academic support from a network of caring professionals. Programs are limited in size, and all fees are in addition to the school’s tuition.
