Dear All Prospective Spartanburg Day School Parents:
Spartanburg Day School offers a unique education for your child. Whether you are just beginning to research the options for your child’s education, are new or will be new to the area or are looking for a new academic environment, the Office of Admissions welcomes you to Spartanburg Day School.
I welcome you to the site, which hopefully answers all your questions that involve becoming part of the Day School community. But first I will ask you a question-Why should you choose the Spartanburg Day School as the next rung of your child’s educational “ladder”? Perhaps the answer might lie in the following responses:
Tradition: As we enter our 50th year, the Day School is the most senior school in Spartanburg County. Indeed we are the oldest accredited school in the state.
Academics: We have been told by many people that we are the top academic school in the county, opinions reinforced by a) 100% of our seniors taking the SAT compared to the next highest percentile high school ranking at 54%, b) by 100% of our seniors matriculating at 4 year colleges, c) the International Middle Years Programme providing a framework of academic challenge that encourages students to embrace and understand the connections between traditional subjects and the real world, d) 50% of the 7th graders qualified for the Duke Identification Program (TIP) which places them in the top 5% of 7th graders in the country, e) 90% of the 6th graders scored a perfect 100 on the national mythology exam and f) a fully accredited IB Primary Years Programme focusing on the development of the whole child as an inquirer.
Arts: Arts experiences abound: drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, collage, art history, chorus, Concert Band, Jazz Band, classroom productions, dance lessons, private lessons in piano, percussion, guitar, violin and voice; publication opportunities include yearbook, newspaper and literary magazine; the Dent Endowment provides Artists-in-Residence, professional exhibits and performers are all available at age appropriate levels.
Athletics: Most students, from grade 4K through 12 have physical education or sports many days. Grades 4K through 5 have physical education and grades 6 through 12 compete in interscholastic games. All League and All State players can be found at here. League champions and State tournament teams are found on campus.
Outreach: Among other projects, the Lower School adopts grandparents at a local assisted care home, collected Pennies for Pets, sends books to needy schools, raised funds and awareness for youthful cancer victims. The Middle School focuses on helping the elderly, the environment and needy Spartanburg County residents while the Upper School formed a Kudzu Coalition, supported water conservation, conducted successful canned food drives and had a large contingent participate in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program.
Spartanburg Day School provides the highest quality, most well-rounded education to our students so they become strong independent thinkers and leaders. They demonstrate daily the old adage “strong minds in strong bodies”. If I have given you a glimpse of “Why SDS”, please look further or call the Admissions Office at 864-327-0800. I hope you can see your family in our family.
Sincerely yours,
Andrew L. Scheffer
Director of Admissions
