SDS Athletic Awards

Spartanburg Days School presents the following awards to student athletes:

  • Varsity Letters
  • Team Awards
  • Special Awards

Varsity Letter Requirements:

The varsity award letter will be presented to an athlete who satisfies the participation requirements as listed below, completes all team obligations and receives the recommendation of the head coach. (The head coach may recommend to the Athletic Director a wavier of these requirements under an unusual circumstance)

Baseball a) play in one-half of all innings played; b) pinch hit, DH, or pinch run in three fourths of all games played; c) pitcher in four starts or six game appearances; d) participate in the state tournament.
Basketball Contribute in all practice situations and support the team from playing position or from a supportive bench position.
Cross Country Participate in seventy five percent of all meets. 
Field Hockey Participate in fifty percent of all regular season games.
Golf Participate in seventy five percent of all matches.
Soccer  Participate in fifty percent of all regular season games.
Swimming Participate in seventy five percent of all meets.
Tennis  Participate in fifty percent of all regular season matches
Track  Participate in seventy five percent of all meets.

Injury Rule: Any athlete who is a starter or plays regularly and was thereafter injured may be awarded a letter, if in the head coaches judgment, the athlete would have met the lettering requirements.

Varsity Letter Award

  1. 1st- year award: Chenille award letter with pin signifying the sport.
    (Note: should an athlete letter in another sport, he or she will not receive a second chenille letter.)
  2. 2nd year award: Gold service bar
  3. 3rd year award: Gold service bar
  4. 4th year award: Gold service bar and a sport plaque indicating the recipient as a four-year varsity letter winner.

Awards/Varsity

  1. Most Valuable Player:  This individual should have demonstrated not only talent, but also leadership, teamwork and commitment. A plaque will be awarded.
  2. Most Improved Player:  This individual should have demonstrated hard-work, commitment and improvement of individual skill development. A plaque will be awarded.
  3. Coaches’ Award:  Coaches may use this award as a “thank you” to an individual player who has been a positive component to the program. A plaque will be awarded.
  4. 12 Sport Athlete:   This award is given to an athlete that has physically participated in athletics at SDS each trimester for four years. (the Independent Physical Education program, physical education courses, managing and athletic trainer do not qualify towards this award.)

Awards Junior Varsity / Middle School

Most Valuable Player / Most Improved / Coaches Award: The criteria for these awards is the same as the varsity awards; plaques are given to the selected athletes.

Special Athletic Awards

The Dent Award: This special recognition is presented at the end of the school year to the most outstanding female and male athlete for the entire school year. (It is usually given to athletes in the senior class.)
