From the nurse: Tough season for flu and strep
We are getting reports daily of students and faculty who are falling victim to either flu or strep infections. There are several influenzas percolating locally, Strain A, Strain B and a stomach bug. Strep infections don't seem to be seasonal, but crop up in waves, while influenzas usually limit themselves to cool weather months.
Symptoms to watch for:
Strep: sore throat, low grade fever, stomach issues, rash (infrequently), headache, malaise.
Once a person has been started on antibiotics for 24 hours, they are no longer considered contagious.
Flu: Moderate to high temp (over 100°), generalized body aches, weakness, headache, dry cough, sore throat, stomach issues, malaise.
Though the most common flu symptoms will last 3-4 days, the cough and weakness can be a problem for up to two weeks.
If you suspect that you or a family member has flu or strep, please follow through with the test to confirm the diagnosis. Also, when you do have a positive flu or strep test, please let the school know.
Stay well by washing hands frequently and keeping a reasonable distance from people who are showing signs of illness. Stay home when you are sick, and give yourself time to heal before returning. NEVER come to school with a fever or if you've had fever within the last 24 hours.
