Physical Education/Health

2010_LS_PE
We believe that healthy bodies are as important as healthy minds.  Our students have PE class four times a week.  They work on fundamental movements, body awareness, body management, rhythmic, fitness and sport skills.  In grades 2nd through 4th, physical fitness is stressed and the Presidential Physical Fitness Program is implemented throughout the year.  Students enjoy an action packed PE time where games, sport, and activities provide opportunities to improve their skills.  Emphasis is placed on lifetime participation in sports and the program enables each student to experience success in a number of physical activities.  Our programs also develop leadership, cooperation, self-esteem, creativity and a sense of fair play.

We want our students to understand the importance of nutrition and healthy eating.  Flik, our food service provider at SDS, focuses on a delicious and healthy dining experience for our students.  Chef Ed and his staff plan celebrations throughout the year.  Farmers’ Day and Spring Harvest Day focus on local farms providing locally grown and produced food for our meals.  Students are adventuresome and get to try different cuisines when we celebrate the Chinese New Year and Mardi Gras.  Chef Ed visits each classroom and teaches lessons on Color Your Plate Healthy.  Every day, Chef Ed encourages students to make good choices at lunchtime.  Bon Appetit Lower School!
