Language Arts
Our Lower School language arts program is dedicated to having students love books and reading. Our goal is to build a strong reading foundation in phonics, decoding, comprehension and fluency. Students develop their skills through rich literature-based activities in reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students are engaged in novel studies, literature circles and the Accelerated Reader program. All students are writers and authors as they work with the Six Traits of Writing program. Our young writers take great pride in their published pieces. Students apply all they’ve learned in spelling, mechanics, and grammar to all aspects of the curriculum.
AR books help you get attached to reading, so when you’re older, you’ll like to read. Mabry Baehr, class of 2015
Students look forward to Book Character Day when our first graders dress up as their favorite storybook characters such as Amelia Bedelia or Harry Potter. Fourth graders enjoy performing at Poetry Alive as they act out poems with their own original costumes and set designs.
