Community Service
Being a good citizen goes beyond our school. Students regularly reach out to our community and to the world. As early as 4K, every student learns that to be a good citizen, it is their responsibility to give back to the community. Every classroom decides what community service projects they want to embrace. Some classes pick up trash on the school grounds, some collect winter coats for the homeless, and some plant flowers at the Children’s Advocacy Center.
Last year the entire Lower School raised over $3,000 for Zig the Pig! Our students did chores at home and earned money to help children who have cancer. The fourth graders organized our Zig the Pig project and helped with our assemblies. Zig the Pig came to visit our students and we danced with him as we celebrated our fundraising efforts.
Our second graders studied an IB unit called Making Waves. In this unit they study such things as the properties of water, how to conserve water and the water cycle. They found out about a school in Kwa Aulu Natel, Africa that was in an area experiencing severe drought. The school was in need of school supplies. The second graders then went to the SDS community and asked for donations. They filled up a pick up truck with school supplies and sent them to the school in need. They made strong connections with their new friends across the ocean.
