Spartanburg Day School concert and jazz bands traveled to Atlanta last week to compete in the Fiesta-val music.

Both bands won their category and SDS was named the grand champion - an impressive achievement given that Griffins were competing against far larger schools.

“Many factors played into the success of the band and jazz band,” said band president Ian Rutledge (senior). “But particularly the dedication of the students the amazing work of our director Mr. Barnes.”

Barnes was also recognized at the festival. He won the Award of Distinction (Outstanding Director) given in recognition of a notable contribution to musical excellence

“Being acknowledged in this way felt amazing, especially as a senior,” said Rutledge. “It feels that we have really been rewarded for many years of hard work and constant improvement.”

You can hear the award-winning band in concert this Thursday in the Dent Gallery. Performance starts at 7 pm.
