SENIOR HONOR ROLL

  • The following students were recognized for Spartanburg Day School senior honor roll: Class of 2006 members who have achieved the honor roll: Michael Bargar, Anna Cote, Lauren Hatch, Cathryn Hunt, Lauren Meeks, Alex Sinners, Katherine Turnage, Skyler Walker, Mike Zhadkevich. SCHOLARSHIPS

  • This year¡¯s graduating class of 32 submitted over 150 applications to more than 90 different colleges and universities in 26 states & the District of Columbia. Over 115 applications qualified for admission, and 85% of the class received scholarships and grants. Each year the National Merit Scholarship Corporation conducts a competition to identify the top student scholars in the country. The competition uses the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test as a measuring rod, and students earning scores in the top 3% nationally are identified as Commended Scholars while those in the top 1% nationally are recognized as National Merit Finalists. This year¡¯s senior class has 1 Commended Scholar: Eric Moretz. The Class of 2006 also has 1 National Merit Finalist: Michael Bargar.
  • The Palmetto Fellows Scholarship was created to recognize academically talented students in South Carolina who will be attending a South Carolina College. Two Spartanburg Day School seniors¡ªMichael Bargar and Eric Moretz--have qualified for the award this year. Michael has accepted his scholarship and will attend Furman University in the fall. In addition Michael has been awarded one of twenty¨Cfive Hollingsworth scholarships covering full tuition for four years at Furman University.
  • Bailey Cone has accepted a scholarship from Virginia Intermont College honoring both her academic success and her success in riding. She also received a scholarship from the Tryon Hunt Club. Both Anna Cote and Darryl Evans have accepted scholarship offers from Furman University. Laura Childers has accepted a scholarship from Wingate. Skyler Walker from the University of NC at Chapel Hill. Henry Doerner from Jacksonville University. Amanda West at Columbia College. Katie Gould from Wofford College. Elizabeth Turnage from Presbyterian. And Leah Nakom from Oxford at Emory.
  • The following students will qualify as Life Scholars and will use their scholarships at in-state schools: Austen Camp, Lauren Hatch, Lauren Meeks and Max Russell at the College of Charleston; Mary Anna Lynch at Clemson; and Alex Sinners at the University of South Carolina.
  • Ashley Gladson was the recipient of the Converse College Trustee Honor Scholarship Award.
  • Katherine Turnage was the recipient of the Wofford College,
  • Lauren Hatch was the recipient of the Altrusa Scholarship. Altrusa is the parent organization of Astra, Spartanburg Day School¡¯s girl¡¯s community service club.

ACADEMIC AWARDS

FACULTY RECOGNITION

  • Dick Barnes, band instructor at Spartanburg Day School was the recipient of The Graduates¡¯ Award. This award celebrates a teacher who helped transition students from juniors to seniors, playing a supportive role.
  • Mary Steele, third grade teacher at Spartanburg Day School was awarded the Unsung Hero Award by the school for her dedication to the school.

CUM LAUDE SOCIETY

  • The highest academic award which the Day School bestows is membership in the Cum Laude Society. The Cum Laude Society is the high school fraternity of Phi Beta Kappa, the most distinguished honorary fraternity of the collegiate world. The Spartanburg Day School chapter of the Cum Laude Society is the oldest in South Carolina. Today there are 170 chapters in the United States. Each chapter of the Cum Laude Society may elect members on the basis of academic excellence. Not more than 20% of the senior class may be elected, nor more than 10% of the junior class. The following seniors have been recognized at part of the Cum laude Society: Eric Moretz, Michael Bargar and Mike Zhadkevich. Skyler Walker, Anna Cote, and Katherine Turnage. The following juniors have been recognized as part of the Cum Laude Society: Smita Patel, Kathleen Sovenyhazy, and Molly Inclan. Ms. Lee Vasbinder, math teacher at Spartanburg day School, was chosen by the society to join the society as well.

OTHER AWARDS

  • Maggie Wallace, a first grade student at Spartanburg Day School, placed first in K-3 entrants in the Second Annual Caucus for Women in Statistics Poster project Competition. Maggie received $100 and a certificate of recognition. (photo attached)
  • Elsa Crowley, a graduate of Spartanburg Day School, was recently honored at the Honors Day Ceremony at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, as the recipient of the John C. Williams Prize in Greek for demonstration of excellence in the study of first-year Greek.
  • Anna Cote was the recipient of the South Carolina Governor¡¯s Citizenship Award. This award honors service, leadership, responsibility, character and discipline.
  • Mike Zhadkevich was selected to participate in the week-long Milliken/Wofford Leadership Institute.
  • Mike Zhadkevich and Lauren Hatch were both recognized with the Wendy¡¯s Heisman Award¡ªThese two student athletes were recognized by the Wendy¡¯s Corporation at a state-wide banquet. The Wendy¡¯s High School Heisman Award is presented to students who exemplify the best in athletics, scholarship, and good citizenship.
  • The Big Brother/Big Sister program recognized senior Ivey Foster as ¡°Big Sister of the Year.¡±

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

  • Five Spartanburg Day School students attended South Carolina State University¡¯s Science and Technology day, an engineering contest involving different competitions. Rob Jordan, Casey Rogers, and Henry Hamilton placed second in the CO2 Dragster competition, while Lucy Lynch and Carey Adams placed second in the Media Design Competition. Each student was awarded a $300 savings bond for second place finishes.

  • Spartanburg Day School started a Robotics Club this past school year. At the end of the year, it was determined that the Robotics Program will become a part of the eighth-grade science curriculum in the fall. Spartanburg Day School has also formed a partnership with The Staubli Group, founded in 1892 near Zurich. Staubli has a plant located in Duncan, SC. The CEO has graciously consented to participate in a mentor program. Two Robotics students will be chosen to work with Staubli employees one afternoon per month. The students will be exposed to textile machinery, quick connects, robotics, customer training for maintenance, service and programming of robots, and business transactions. They will also have the opportunity to use computer-assisted software. The partnership will begin in the fall of 2006.

LITERATURE

  • Thomas Johnson, a rising seventh-grade student at Spartanburg Day School was selected as third place winner out of one thousand entries in The South Carolina Center for the Book and the South Carolina State Library 2006 Letters About Literature contest. He won $25 and read his paper, Arthur Ashe: Of Tennis and the Human Spirit at the ceremony in Columbia. BOOK AWARDS

  • Dhru Patel was the recipient of the Brevard College Book Award.
  • Mark Crowley was the recipient of The Vanderbilt Book Award. The Piedmont Vanderbilt Club presents the award to a junior who has shown outstanding academic achievement and exemplary community involvement.
  • Will Dobson, a graduate of SDS and Middlebury College, sponsors the Middlebury College Book Award. Kathleen Sovenhazy was the recipient of the Middlebury Book Award. This award is presented to an exceptional student who has shown remarkable commitment to, and achievement in, one or more areas of the liberal arts, including language and literature, history and the sciences.
  • Molly Inclan was the recipient of The Sewanee Book Award which is awarded to a junior who has shown outstanding scholarship, leadership, concern for others, and integrity.
  • Amy Dillard, a graduate of SDS and Wellesley College, sponsors the Wellsley book Award. The recipient of the award was Smita Patel because she is an exceptional female student who has shown outstanding achievement, dedicated academic leadership, and a joy of learning within a liberal arts curriculum.
  • Lauren Hatch was the recipient of the Daughters of the American Revolution award which recognizes exemplary citizenship and community involvement and honors dependability, service, leadership and patriotism.
  • Michael Bargar was the recipient of the American Legion award which recognizes students who have exhibited courage, honor, leadership, patriotism, scholarship, and service to the community.

OTHER NEWS:

  • Lydia Barrett, a rising sixth grade student at Spartanburg Day school, will play the part of Violet Beauregard in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The play will be performed at the J. Harley Bonds Career Center in Greer, SC, June 16-25, 2006. For more information, please call (864) 848-5383.
  • Spartanburg Day School¡¯s Middle and Upper school students led their first March of Dimes effort this year and raised $1,200 for the organization.
  • Spartanburg Day School has been selected as a recipient of the 2006 Kids Growing with Dutch Bulbs Award for their work with gardening. The school will receive 202 premium Dutch bulbs for the fall, complete with planting instructions and tips for curriculum. The Spartanburg Day school started a school-wide gardening project this past spring. The garden is being incorporated into the International Baccalaureate Programme.
