Camp Griffin is the summer answer for students of all ages and interests. Half- and full-day options are available for rising 3K-12th grade Spartanburg Day School and non-SDS students alike.

Learn about robots and computer programming; set your sights on STEM activities; test out your soccer skills; or embrace your creative side. Sign up for one week of fun, or plan to stay all summer long. The options are endless.

Camps typically start at just $115 per week, and there are extended day options for campers up through 6th grade.

Week of June 5

Griffin Day Camp: Color Me Crazy
Description: Get ready, campers, for a colorful week of all sorts of fun hands-on experiments and rainbow art. We’ll make our very own wheel of color and learn all about the crazy world of colors. Come just for the morning (9 a.m.-noon), the afternoon (1-4 p.m.) or all day. Lunch Bunch is included free of charge for full-day campers (9 a.m.-4 p.m.) to enjoy lunch that they bring. (Half-day campers can register for Lunch Bunch separately.)

Coach Bob’s All-Sports Camp, Session #1
Description: Coach Bob Allsbrook emphasizes the importance of sportsmanship as girls and boys develop their individual skills and teamwork. We play so many different types of games like Dodgeball, Black Out Tag, Frogs & Ants, Survivor, Soccer Bowling, Parachute, Fruit Basket, Steal the Bacon, and much, much more. Awards and daily prizes, with lunch provided for full-day campers. Morning-only campers are also welcome from 9 a.m.-Noon if a full day of action is too much.
Cost: $195 (9 a.m.-noon) or $285 (9 a.m.-3:30 p.m.)

Friday Tumbling Club, Week 1
9 a.m.-Noon
Description: We’ve taken a week’s worth of camp and spread it over the summer, added a bonus day, and created our Friday Tumbling Club! Boys and girls have a blast tumbling with Coach Hannah, and campers will love the super fun hands-on activities that they create too. Can’t come for all 6 Fridays? Just sign up for the weeks you can make it, and we’ll see you here! This week, our theme is “Hawaiian Hullaballoo,” so kick off the summer with island flair!

You’re Sciensational: Make It and Take It
9 a.m.-Noon
Description: With hands-on and super exciting activities, campers will make and take home a wide assortment of toys designed to teach science concepts in a fun, hands-on way. Grow and take home a crystal tree. Make an energy bead bracelet and watch as those amazing beads turn from white to a rainbow of colors before your eyes. Build a working electric motor. Make your own Sharpie pen T-shirt, and learn some cool chemistry. Make your own bubbling blobs and explore the properties of a density tube. Make silly putty, glowing goo, green flubber, and other cool projects. And by the way, we will make ice cream in our own amazing, different, Sciensational way!

You’re Sciensational: Egyptian Dig
1-4 p.m.
Description: Let your campers discover the amazing science of archaeology as they uncover ancient artifacts. They’ll learn about Egyptian life while excavating with tools that a real archaeologist uses. As we excavate for a scarab, we’ll also dig for artifacts such as a hieroglyphic tablet, an ankh, and even a jackal—all yours to keep. Let’s go back in time with a hands-on archaeological, sand-sculpting experience!

From Page to Stage: Drama!
1-4 p.m.
Description: Would your camper like a crash-course on how a play is made, from the writing of a script to the execution of the production? Well, our activities include acting games, creative writing, and costume, sound and/or set design. On the final day of camp, the students will present their playmaking work during a (casual) final showcase. No previous stage experience is necessary to come play with us!

Speed and Agility Training, Week 1
Tuesday and/or Thursday, 5-5:45 p.m.
Description: Offered BY a competitive athlete who has competed at the college and professional levels FOR the young athlete who wants a serious program to improve speed, core strength, agility, and reaction times for any sport. Come all thru June, or just pick your sessions.

Griffin Day Camp: SDS Olympics
Description: On your mark, get set, GO—let the learning begin! We promise a fun-filled week where our Olympians will work together in minute-to-win-it games, relay races, bean bag toss, and much more! Description: SDS Coach Nick Buxton will help kids improve their soccer skills, like ball-handling skills, shooting, passing, small sided games, and much more, so come on out!

Global Web Designers
9 a.m.-Noon
Description: This week, our campers are teamed up with another group of students elsewhere in the world who are also learning how to code their own websites. We will collaborate each day with our global partners while designing and publishing websites that showcase each camper’s research on worldwide climate initiatives and solutions, as well as each other’s cultures and fun hobbies. Let’s Get Cooking with Books with Ms. Tina & Ms. Kim

Description: Let’s give a pig a pancake, a moose a muffin, and much more! This week will be filled with fun crafts and cooking adventures with a new book each day!

Description: Welcome, Griffin explorers! Let’s go deep, deep, deep down under the sea to discover all that the ocean has to offer! This week will be fun-filled with crafts, games, and experiments. Chess Mates
9 a.m.-Noon
Description: This week offers a great environment for campers who are beginning or intermediate chess players to learn or develop skills and strategies of one of the oldest games in the world. You don’t have to be an expert to have a blast!

Griffin Volleyball Camp
9 a.m.-Noon
Description: Come on out and gain a great understanding of volleyball as we break down the fundamental skills of passing, setting, hitting and serving, and basic rules while enjoying fun games to encourage teamwork and communication!

Hawaiian Hula Dancing and Crafting
9 a.m.-Noon
Description: The Dance of the Elements, a simple hula, is about our connection to nature and the land, what the Hawaiians call the ’Aina. Campers are encouraged to be creative in how they express the movements of the different elements of nature: the sun, the moon, the stars, etc. Campers will also learn Hawaiian crafts that promote the sharing of talents, creativity, and knowledge, as they create a costume for themselves and their own instruments and leis, in order to present their dance at the end of the week for family and friends.

Rev It Up with Robotics

Description: Imagine it, build it, and make it go! This week, girls and boys will explore the exciting world of robotics, with campers’ imaginations fueled and powered by the LEGO Mindstorm vehicles!

Friday Tumbling Club: Week 3

Coach Nick’s All-Sports Camp

Description: Coach Nick Buxton offers a fun-filled week of games and active fun while helping you to develop individual skills and teamwork. Global Game Strategists

Description: This week, our campers are teamed up with another group of students elsewhere in the world who are also embarking on an educational, dice-based adventure game about protecting the planet’s trees. With action and adventure similar to Pokemon Go!, they will engage in innovative gameplay that strengthens math skills, develops new problem solving skills and encourages teamwork. Each day, our campers and their global partners collaborate on shared projects and exchange video messages via our mobile-friendly platform. Description: Calling all secret agents! Step into the SDS Secret Spy School where you will become the ultimate Secret Griffin Spy! We will not only look the part but learn how to read and create invisible ink messages, dust for fingerprints, and crack codes. Description: 1st grade is right around the corner, so let’s brush off our summer skills and get ready for the new year. Reading, writing, and math will be the lessons of the week, all mixed in with some good old fashioned-fun!

Noah Dahlman Basketball Camp

Description: With emphasis on age-appropriate fundamentals and footwork, Noah sets out to develop players’ greatness, mental toughness, and leadership with a variety of high quality drills & lessons. Griffin Craft Sessions #1: Super Simple Summer Sewing
9 a.m.-Noon
Description: Creating one-of-a-kind hand-finished products with colorful fabrics will surely be an exciting adventure for your camper! We will create aprons, napkins, and place mats using machine- and hand-stitching methods. Fun fabric and embellishments such as buttons, ribbons, and seashells add to the enjoyment!

Junior Engineering and Design
9 a.m.-Noon
Description: Our engineering & design camp is all hands-on, with a focus on critical thinking and problem-solving processes. Campers will apply architecture, engineering, science, mathematics, and reading to work through obstacles and will also plan and construct a different take-home object each day.

Description: Crochet is quick to learn and quick to create—and it’s a great way to add a personal touch to just about any item. Proclaim your style for all to see with accessories for hair or hands, room decor, or even facecloths and toys. They’re all an easy crochet away in this camp. No experience required, and all materials provided.

Build Your Own Video Game with Scratch

Description: Campers will be introduced to the wonders of computer programming and game creation through the Scratch programming language, made just for kids.

Description: Join professional comic artist Jesse Thomas and our very own Mrs. J-T for a fun week exploring all types of mediums in art! You will make a wonderful creation each day to take home!

Week of July 24

Griffin Day Camp: Camp Out Under the Stars
Description: A-camping we will go, a-camping we will go, the great outdoors is so much fun, a-camping we will go! Join Griffin Campers this week while we look outside and up to the stars! This week we will learn campfire songs, go on scavenger hunts, and make s’mores using a solar oven! Come just for the morning (9 a.m.-noon), the afternoon (1-4 p.m.) or all day. Lunch Bunch is included free of charge for full-day campers (9 a.m.-4 p.m.) to enjoy lunch that they bring.

Oooey, Gooey Science with Ms. Trish
9 a.m.-Noon
Description: Our little campers will get to do all those fun experiments that Mom doesn’t always get to offer at home, like making homemade elephant toothpaste and giant bubble snakes, writing in invisible ink, and taking Plaster of Paris animal tracks. We’ll create beautiful garden stepping stones and tie-dye science t-shirts. We will learn all about the soil, and each junior camper-scientist will build a “wormery.” We will discuss insects and make creative bug jars that the kids can continue to use the rest of the summer—we will even learn how airplanes fly with ping pong balls and toilet paper.

Griffins Climb!
9 a.m.-Noon
Description: This 4-day camp will touch on a new climbing basic from Monday thru Thursday, such as top-roping, bouldering, footwork, and outdoor climbing. Campers will group by age and have the opportunity to climb each day and have a blast. No experience necessary!

You’re Sciensational: Creative Engineer
9 a.m.-Noon
Description: Camper-Engineers work with an advanced 3D construction kit that is theirs to keep and take home at week’s end. During the week, campers design and build simple and complex models of a vehicle, a robot, or of buildings. Campers also get their very own 3-volt geared motor to power up a moveable radar surveyor and learn the many ways that they can make this motor run. “Hands-on” is the best, so prepare to build from directions and from your own imagination!

Adventures in Songwriting
1-4 p.m.
Description: Do you love music? Would you like to explore songwriting and your favorite music in depth? Would you like to learn from other local songwriters? Would you like to learn the basics on guitar and piano to help you compose songs? If so, then come compose with us!

Week of July 31

Griffin Day Camp: We Scream for Ice Cream
9 a.m.-4 p.m.
Description: Aaaahhhh!! I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! Join us for a week filled with nothing but ice cream, when we make our own ice cream, a paper-maché cone, and have other ice cream-oriented activities. Come just for the morning (9 a.m.-noon), the afternoon (1-4 p.m.) or all day. Lunch Bunch is included free of charge for full-day campers (9 a.m.-4 p.m.) to enjoy lunch that they bring. Description: How would your camper like to build a robot with four built-in microphones to detect a sound’s source? Which then turns and moves accordingly? These lucky campers learn about different gears and sensors as they build their very own robot, also building other robots in groups. “Sumo wrestling” and obstacle course events will showcase campers’ robots as well, the Sciensational way!

Griffin Craft Sessions #3: Learn How to Knit
1-4 p.m.
Description: Did you know that you can knit with your fingers or even your arms? And, sure, maybe some needles too, but definitely come join in the fiber fun while we learn how to knit a hat (or a hammock?), make friendship bracelets, and more while we create projects in all colors, sizes, and fiber types. No experience required!
