Community Service is a living and authentic component of Upper School life. Students may choose to participate in one of two service organizations: Interact or Astra.
Interact is a male community service club - the youth version of Rotary Club International. Spartanburg Day School’s Interact club has several objectives:
- to participate in existing community projects, such as the Soup Kitchen at 2nd Presbyterian Church, the Sidekicks program, and the Coalition to Control Kudzu without Chemicals
- to develop and implement original student service and fundraising projects
- to create an awareness at Spartanburg Day School of social and environmental issues in the community, the nation, and the world
- to instill in its members a spirit of service, a sense of place, and an awareness of civic responsibility
- to provide a forum for students to learn and practice leadership skills
ASTRA is a female community service program - the youth extension of Altrusa International. The goals of ASTRA at Spartanburg Day School are as follows:
- to use one’s time and talent to enrich the lives of others and to make the community a better place to live
- to work with local civic and volunteer groups on service projects of lasting benefit such as the Big Brother/Big Sister Program, Special Olympics and Adopt-a-Highway
- to raise money for worthy causes such as Katrina relief and cancer research
- to interact with local business, professional and civic leaders who have made service a component of their lives
- to form lasting friendships and to share ideals, goals and aspirations with others in one’s peer group
- to develop leadership potential by assuming positions of responsibility
