Upper School

Balancing a rigorous, college-preparatory curriculum with careful attention to each student’s progress and needs, The Upper School prepares its students to thrive in college and beyond.

We recognize that this is a crucial time of transition, from youth to young adulthood, and that this transition demands high standards of performance and behavior coupled with patient mentoring. Hence we place emphasis on self-reliance, enlightened citizenship in both the school community and the community at large, and an authentic engagement in the learning process.

At the heart of this endeavor is the school’s Honor Code: As a member of the Spartanburg Day School community, I agree that I must demonstrate respect both for myself and for every other member of the community. An important aspect of demonstrating respect is that I will not lie, cheat, or steal, nor tolerate those who do. The Honor Council , consisting of both students and faculty, meets regularly to discuss the promotion of personal and academic integrity amongst the student body.

Classes in the Upper School are small with a 1:9 teacher-student ratio. Each student has a faculty adviser who oversees that student’s academic progress throughout the year, facilitates communication with parents, and serves as an advocate during times of personal or academic struggle.
