Middle School Faculty (7th & 8th Grade Science)

S partanburg Day School is currently seeking a Middle School Faculty member for the 2025-2026 school year.  Spartanburg Day School is a nationally recognized, nonsectarian school, enrolling students aged 2 to Grade 12. Spartanburg Day School offers a vast array of academic and co-curricular options in a charming college town that is growing in the attractive South Carolina Upstate. The Middle School Science Faculty is responsible for delivering engaging and comprehensive science instruction to 7th and 8th grade students. This teacher will foster a stimulating and supportive learning environment, helping students develop critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a solid understanding of key scientific principles.  The teacher will utilize a variety of instructional strategies, technologies, and hands-on activities to support diverse learning needs and ensure academic success.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plans and develops an engaging, age-appropriate course of study in the classroom, adhering to educational best practices and SDS curriculum guidelines.
  • Designs and presents individual lesson plans in one or more academic subjects using a variety of teaching techniques that appeal to various learning styles and methods.
  • Prepares materials for lessons, assignments, and tests; evaluates, corrects, and grades student performance.
  • Discusses academic difficulties or behavioral problems with students as they arise.
  • Monitors students’ progress throughout the year and evaluates preparedness for secondary (upper) school.
  • Communicates all progress and concerns with tact and professionalism to parents and, as appropriate, other faculty, and/or division head.
  • Builds and maintains positive relationships with parents.
  • Enforces safety and security standards for students, staff, and visitors.
  • Maintains required paperwork for individual student files, attendance and incident reports, and other necessary records.
  • Participates in faculty meetings, educational conferences, in-service opportunities, workshops, and other training seminars.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry or Physics
  • Master’s degree, preferred
  • State teaching license, preferred

Experience:

  • Previous teaching experience with middle-school aged children, preferred
  • Thorough understanding of pedagogy and the best practices in education.
  • Ability to design lessons that teach curriculum in an engaging manner, applying various teaching  methods such as lectures, discussions, demonstrations, and individual or collaborative projects and research.
  • Previous coaching experience desired
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills to manage and control the classroom.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a proven ability to maintain professionalism
