Lower School Academic Support Specialist

Spartanburg Day School is seeking a Lower School Academic Support Specialist within our VISTAS Program for the 2024-2025 school year.  The Lower School program, established in 1998, offers individualized instruction for SDS students in 4k through fourth grade. Improved academic skills and enhanced self-esteem are the hallmarks of this program. Students attend the VISTAS program during the school day for instruction in reading, mathematics, writing skills, and general curriculum support, as needed. 

We seek a highly organized and engaging academic support specialist to provide one-on-one instruction to students in grades 4k-4th grade.  The ideal candidate will be motivated, creative, and passionate about helping students achieve their academic goals. This individual will work closely with students in a one-on-one setting, focusing on reading, writing, and math skills development. Additionally, the candidate will collaborate with classroom teachers to understand the long-range plans and tailor lessons to meet the individual needs of each student at their respective grade levels.  

Responsibilities:

●      Conduct one-on-one sessions with students to assess their learning needs and develop personalized learning plans

●      Implement research-based methodologies effectively to support students with reading difficulties

●      Plan and deliver engaging and interactive, multi-sensory lessons in reading, writing, and math tailored to individual student needs and learning styles

●      Utilize a variety of instructional strategies and resources to enhance student learning and comprehension

●      Monitor student progress closely through ongoing assessments and adjust teaching strategies accordingly

●      Collaborate with classroom teachers to review long-range plans and identify areas where additional support is needed for individual students

●      Participate in student development and achievement related conferences with parents, students, counselors, teachers, and/or administrators

●      Communicate and collaborate regularly with faculty members, students and families regarding student interventions, accommodations, learning needs and academic growth

●      Maintain accurate records of student progress and achievements

●      Foster a positive and supportive learning environment that promotes student confidence and academic success

The ideal candidate will possess a bachelor’s degree in Education, Special Education, or a related field from an accredited institution  A master’s degree in education and state licensure is preferred. Orton Gillingham certification and experience working with students with learning differences is highly desirable.
