During Spartanburg Day School's commencement exercises Friday morning, 31 students processed in as seniors and out as graduates of the Class of 2024.
Head of School Dave Skeen welcomed the crowd to the 61st commencement ceremony of Spartanburg Day School.
"There is great cause for celebration as we recognize this class for their accomplishments in the classroom, on the fields, courts, on the stage and throughout our community where they have made their mark, and where they leave for future classes, a high bar of excellence, leadership and service," Skeen said. "...Class of 2024 you should know that you are encircled by those who love you - believe in you - who want the best for you and by those who will always welcome you back to the Day School."
Billy Blackford '75, a Spartanburg Day School alum, former board president, and senior vice president/wealth management at Janney Montgomery Scott, served as this year's keynote speaker. Blackford passed on 10 essential virtues to the class: wisdom, justice, fortitude, self control, love, positive attitude, hard work, integrity, gratitude and humility.
"Look around you. Look left. Look right. These friends of yours in your senior class and even the classes below you, these friends will be your friends for life," Blackford said. "Right now today, I look around and see some of my best friends from my days here and they are still my great friends. The Spartanburg Day School will always be a part of who and what you are. You all have the spirit of the Griffin inside you. This place will always be a part of you."
Valedictorian André Nguyen shared about growing up as a Griffin since Preschool, and of the connections made over the years together. Speaking to his fellow graduates, he said, "Each of you has made high school an unforgettable experience, and I'll forever be grateful for that. All 30 of you have left a permanent mark on me and will continue to be sources of inspiration, reminding me of the invaluable connections we've forged over these past four years... Continue embodying what we've learned during our time at the Day School because I have a feeling it will be an integral part of our inevitable success."
