During Spartanburg Day School's commencement exercises Friday morning, 44 students processed in as seniors and out as graduates of the Class of 2022.
Head of School Rachel Deems welcomed the crowd to the 59th commencement ceremony of Spartanburg Day School.
"Those of us who shared this last walk with you this morning will never forget you," Deems told the graduates, "for you are forever a Griffin."
Spartanburg Day School alum and Principal and Spartanburg Office Director of McMillan Pazdan Smith Architecture William Gray '00 served as this year's keynote speaker. Addressing the graduates, Gray shared what the phrase "be more" means to him. He encouraged graduates to be grateful, be purposeful and to be themselves.
"You are all on your respective launch pads," Gray said. "Take off. Make an impact. Be grateful for the journey. Be purposeful. Be yourself, and above all, continue to be more."
Valedictorian Karine Nguyen challenged her fellow graduates to be more present, today and in the months and years ahead.
"Relish the celebration and excitement of today and use it as a source of inspiration to continue achieving and being extraordinary throughout the rest of your lives," Nguyen said.
Dr. Susan Owens, Upper School math teacher, was awarded the 2022 Larrabee Endowed Chair Award, an award presented annually at graduation to recognize good teaching and honoring a faculty member who incorporates innovation and creativity in the classroom.
The Caggiano Memorial Alumni Award was presented to retiring Alumni Relations Manager Sally Spencer. The award is presented to an alumnus, supporter or faculty member who has distinguished his or herself on a national or international level or for one who has made a significant contribution to the life of the Day School.
The Gary Clark Headmaster's Award is annually presented to a senior who, through graciousness, good manners, courtesy and through a genuine concern for others, has had a positive impact on the Spartanburg Day School community. This year's award was presented to Gracie Keel.
Adom Appiah was awarded the Groblewski Cup, an award recognizing a member of the graduating class for outstanding leadership.
