After an extraordinary coaching career spanning more than four decades, Coach Gregg Nibert is retiring from his role at Spartanburg Day School. A name synonymous with basketball excellence, Nibert has left an indelible mark on every program he has been part of, from his storied tenure at Presbyterian College to his transformative leadership at Spartanburg Day.

Coach Nibert’s journey in coaching began after his playing days at Marietta College, where he developed the knowledge and passion that would define his career. He first made a name for himself as an assistant coach at Presbyterian before taking over as head coach in 1989. Over the next 28 seasons, he amassed 419 wins, led the Blue Hose through the transition from NAIA to NCAA Division I, and built a program rooted in discipline, hard work, and academic excellence.

His impact at Presbyterian College remains deeply woven into the program’s legacy. In recognition of his contributions to the college’s athletic program, Presbyterian honored him in officially naming the court Gregg Nibert Court. The dedication ensures that his name will forever be linked to the gym where he built one of the finest small-college basketball programs in the country.

Following his departure from Presbyterian in 2017, Nibert continued his coaching career at the high school level, first at Spartanburg Christian Academy and later at Spartanburg Day School. At SDS, he remained dedicated to his mission of developing young athletes, focusing not just on their performance on the court but also on their growth as individuals.

In 2022, Coach Nibert guided Spartanburg Day to a SCISA 2A State Championship, leading the varsity boys’ basketball team to a dominant 53-31 victory over Spartanburg Christian Academy. While that championship was a defining achievement, his impact extended far beyond a single season. In the years that followed, he continued to shape young athletes with the same passion, discipline, and mentorship that had been the hallmark of his career.

Now, in 2025, as Coach Nibert steps away from the sidelines, his influence will undoubtedly continue to resonate. His passion for coaching, dedication to his players, and unwavering commitment to developing men of character have set a standard that will inspire generations to come.

More than the wins and championships, Coach Nibert’s legacy is measured by the countless players he has mentored. His emphasis on education and personal growth was evident throughout his career, as every senior who played for him at Presbyterian College earned their degree—a rare and remarkable achievement in college athletics.

Beyond basketball, Coach Nibert and his wife have also dedicated themselves to making a difference off the court as foster parents for over 20 years, positively impacting young lives in ways that extend far beyond the game.

While Spartanburg Day School will miss his presence on the sidelines, the values he instilled in his players will endure long after the final buzzer.
