Spartanburg Day School is buzzing with excitement as football returns for the first time in more than four decades. Griffin Football begins this year at the Middle School level for students in grades 5-8 but aims to expand in the coming years, adding a junior varsity and then a varsity team.
Tomorrow, Sept. 11, will be the Griffins’ first home football game since 1981.
Director of Athletics and Special Projects Mike Cerino expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "We are thrilled to bring football back to campus. The school has rallied around this team, and we're looking forward to seeing them play on our home turf."
Charles Wilson, an eighth-grader, said he was proud of the team's performance at its first away game last week and encouraged everyone to come out this season.
"I'm excited to be playing in front of friends and the school,” he said. “I want to show them that we're actually pretty good. I'm also looking forward to being on our own field and doing plays and getting touchdowns with friends."
Join us for our first home football game on Pennell Field at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11, as we take on St. Joseph's Catholic School. Let's show our support for our young Griffins!
