Spartanburg Day School Wins SCISA 3A Boys Golf State Championship

Spartanburg Day School claimed the South Carolina Independent School Association Class 3A boys golf state championship on Tuesday in commanding fashion, pulling away to finish 25 strokes ahead of runner-up Hilton Head Prep at The Hackler Course at Coastal Carolina University.

The Griffins entered the final round in first place after opening the tournament Monday with a 290, building an 18-stroke lead over Hilton Head Prep. Spartanburg Day followed with a 291 on Tuesday to post a two-day team total of 581 and secure the state title. Hilton Head Prep finished second at 606.

Rounding out the eight-team field were Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach (652), Spartanburg Christian Academy (659), Calhoun Academy (679), Florence Christian School and St. John’s Christian Academy (702), and Orangeburg Prep (724).

Spartanburg Day also dominated the individual standings, producing the tournament medalist and sweeping the top three spots.

Davis Petty claimed medalist recognition with a two-round total of 135, following Monday’s 69 with a tournament-best 66 on Tuesday.

Matthew Roff and Kingston Linder tied for second place at 146, giving the Griffins the top three individual finishers in the championship field.

A.K. Milner finished with a 154, while Reid Hines carded a two-day total of 161.

Led by head coach Todd White, Spartanburg Day used balanced scoring throughout the two-day championship, with all five golfers contributing to the title run. The team format counted the top four scores each day toward the team total.

The championship capped a dominant performance in which the Griffins led wire to wire and placed three golfers atop the individual leaderboard.
