Spartanburg Day School's John Burgess has been recognized on the national stage, earning Safety & Security Director of the Year honors from EducationInsider magazine.

Burgess, who serves as Spartanburg Day School’s Director of Security and Facilities, was selected for his leadership in campus safety, emergency preparedness, and operational security. The recognition highlights his efforts to build a proactive culture of safety while implementing innovative systems and procedures that help protect the Spartanburg Day School community.

A veteran law enforcement professional with more than 25 years of experience, Burgess joined Spartanburg Day School in 2023 following a distinguished career with the Greenville County Department of Public Safety, the Spartanburg Police Department, and the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office.

Since arriving at Spartanburg Day School, Burgess has led a comprehensive approach to campus safety that combines advanced security technology, emergency planning, staff training, and strong partnerships with local first responders. His work has focused not only on strengthening physical security measures but also on fostering a shared commitment to safety among students, faculty, staff, and families.

Under Burgess' leadership, the school has continued to enhance its emergency preparedness efforts, evaluate and improve security protocols, and expand safety education and training opportunities across campus. His collaborative approach has helped ensure that safety remains an integral part of the school's daily operations and long-term planning.

According to EducationInsider, the annual award recognizes education professionals who demonstrate exceptional leadership, innovation, and effectiveness in creating safe learning environments. Burgess was selected from a nationwide pool of nominees representing schools, colleges, and universities across the country.
