Spartanburg Day School is excited to announce the return of football to its athletic offerings and the appointment of Patrick Moffitt as program head for football and Upper School and Middle School admissions associate.
Moffitt brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success to SDS. He comes to the Day School from St. Andrew's School in Middletown, Del., where he served as the associate director of admission and the head football coach. During his tenure, Moffit more than doubled the school’s football roster and guided the team to its first playoff appearances in over two decades.
Moffitt earned a master’s degree in public administration from Norwich University and was later appointed as a coach for the university’s football team. As a student at Williams College –where he graduated with a degree in political science – he was a decorated collegiate quarterback who led his team to an undefeated season and NESCAC conference championship. As a three-year starting quarterback, Moffitt achieved an outstanding 20-4 career record. Among an impressive list of career accolades, he was named the NESCAC Offensive Player of the Year, received the New England Football Writer’s Division II/III Gold Helmet of the Year Award, and was named the Touchdown Club of Southern New Jersey’s Division III Player of the Year.
"We are thrilled to bring back football and welcome Patrick Moffitt to the Spartanburg Day School community," said Head of School Dave Skeen. "Patrick's experience and leadership will be invaluable in building a strong foundation for our new program, and his dual role will allow him to connect with prospective student-athletes and their families in a unique way. We believe Patrick's passion for athletics and his understanding of our school's values will be a tremendous asset in the admissions office."
In his role as program head, Moffitt will oversee all aspects of the football program, including coaching, player development and game strategy. He will also play a key role in shaping the future growth of the program, beginning with a Middle School team in the fall and expanding to include junior varsity and varsity teams in the coming years.
“I am honored to be joining the Spartanburg Day School community,” said Moffitt. “The idea of starting a brand-new football program is something that has been very intriguing to me since I started coaching. When I found out about the opportunity and got connected with Dave Skeen and (Athletic Director) Mike Cerino, it sounded like an incredible opportunity to build something special. From my very first conversations, the enthusiasm, energy, and passion for the school and for getting a football program started really stood out. It was clear to see that this is something important to them and important to the Spartanburg Day School community. They have a vision and a plan and want to build it the right way. As a coach it's very energizing and a dream come true to have the chance to start a football program with the full support of a school and a school community.”
Athletic Director Mike Cerino echoed Moffitt's sentiment. “We are excited to welcome Patrick to the Spartanburg Day School family,” Cerino said. "His experience and coaching philosophy are a perfect fit for our vision for the program. We are confident that he will build a program that is not only competitive but also fosters the development of our student-athletes.”
