Spartanburg Day School

Recent Spartanburg Day School graduate Matthew Roff has been named the recipient of the 2026 Hendley-Blade Scholarship, a prestigious honor presented through the South Carolina Junior Golf Foundation.

The scholarship recognizes a single student each year who demonstrates excellence not only in golf, but also in academics, community service, character, integrity, and sportsmanship. Recipients are selected through a highly competitive process that includes a comprehensive review of their achievements both on and off the golf course.

Roff was chosen from a field of outstanding applicants from across South Carolina and was recognized for his dedication to academic achievement, service to others, and commitment to the values that define the game of golf.

“Golf has taught me lessons that extend far beyond the course,” said Roff, who will continue his education and golf pursuits this fall at Rice University. “The game has helped shape my character and taught me the importance of integrity, respect, and giving back to others. Spartanburg Day School encouraged me to pursue opportunities both inside and outside the classroom, and I am grateful for the teachers, coaches, and mentors who supported me along the way. Receiving this scholarship is incredibly meaningful because it recognizes the values that have been important to me throughout my time at Spartanburg Day School and challenges me to continue living out those values in the future.”

The Hendley-Blade Scholarship was established to honor Dick and Lucille Hendley, longtime supporters of junior golf and community involvement. The award seeks to recognize well-rounded student-athletes who excel in the classroom, demonstrate leadership through service, and uphold the highest standards of character.

“Matthew represents the very best of Spartanburg Day School,” said Head of School Dave Skeen. “He has distinguished himself academically, embraced opportunities to serve others, and consistently demonstrated strong character. We are incredibly proud of him and congratulate him on this well-deserved recognition.”

During his time at Spartanburg Day School, Roff balanced a demanding academic schedule with competitive golf while remaining actively involved in community service efforts. Most recently, he volunteered during the BMW Charity Pro-Am, helping support one of the Upstate's premier professional golf events.

The South Carolina Junior Golf Foundation described Roff's selection as a reflection of his “outstanding dedication to both his academic pursuits and his commitment to the core values of the game.”
