Spartanburg Day School surged into first place Monday after the opening round of the South Carolina Independent School Association Class 3A Boys Golf State Championship at The Hackler Course at Coastal Carolina University.

The Griffins carded a first-round team score of 290 to take an 18-stroke lead over second-place Hilton Head Prep (308) heading into Tuesday’s final round. Each squad consists of five players, with the top four scores counting toward the team total each day.

Rounding out the eight-team field are Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach (324), Spartanburg Christian Academy (334), Calhoun Academy (336), St. John’s Christian Academy (350), Florence Christian School (371), and Orangeburg Prep (371).

Spartanburg Day also sits atop the individual leaderboard after a dominant opening day. Davis Petty fired a 3-under-par 69 and holds first place in the 42-player field entering Tuesday’s final round.

The Griffins claimed each of the top four spots individually after the first round. Kingston Linder is in second place with an even-par 72, Matthew Roff is third with a 74, and A.K. Milner is in a two-way tie for fourth place after posting a 75. Reid Hines added a 76 and is tied for sixth.

Spartanburg Day, led by head coach Todd White, put all five golfers in the top six after the opening round as the Griffins pursue both team and individual state titles.

In addition to the eight qualifying teams, two individual competitors from Thomas Sumter Academy and Williamsburg Academy are also competing in the championship field.

The 36-hole SCISA Class 3A State Championship concludes Tuesday.
