Joined by family, teachers and friends, Spartanburg Day School Jed Howie committed Tuesday to play baseball at the University of South Carolina Union.
At SDS, Jed is a three-sport athlete, playing soccer and on the state championship basketball team in addition to baseball. He has been a valuable member of the varsity baseball team since he was in the seventh grade. As a pitcher and a leader of the team, Jed has gained tremendous confidence and contributed to the improvement of both the baseball program and his teammates.
“Playing baseball at SDS the past seven years has meant so much to me, and watching the team grow and rebuild to having such a good team and future is truly a blessing,” Jed said. “I’d like to thank Coach Paul (Kontowski) and Coach Ron (Edwards) for everything they’ve done for me and this program, and I’m excited to see my teammates succeed in the years to come. Playing for SDS has helped me to become a better player and person and I’m excited to get to play at the next level. Go Griffins!”
Varsity Baseball Coach Paul Kontowski said, “Jed and I started this baseball journey at Spartanburg Day School together over six years ago. Together we have been through some tough times, but throughout the years Jed has been my rock. I knew every day he was going to be there and give everything he had. It has been fun watching him turn not only into this incredible baseball player but into an even better man. I’m looking forward to following your career, I’ll be there cheering you on and I hope you know you will always be a GRIFFIN!”
Athletic Director Joy Couch added, “Griffin athletics is built on students who put the success of their teams in front of their individual achievements. Jed Howie is one of those students. Our teams are better because Jed is involved. His dedication to our baseball team is a reason over the past few years our baseball program has improved. Thank you, Jed Howie; many who follow you will stand on your shoulders. We appreciate you and are so happy your dreams are coming true.”
