Senior Lizzie Rogers was recognized Friday as South Carolina's first place winner in the SIFMA Foundation's fall 2022 National InvestWrite Competition. This national essay competition is the culminating activity for The Stock Market Game, an educational program that encourages students to invest and manage a hypothetical online portfolio of stocks, bonds, mutual funds and cash. For the essay competition, students were asked to discuss research sources needed to make informed choices when developing an investment portfolio. Lizzie's essay emphasized making investing a personal process by supporting companies that resonate with the investor. She also stressed diversifying investments as a strategy for success.
"I am thrilled to congratulate Elizabeth (Lizzie), her teacher and their school," said Melanie Mortimer, president of the SIFMA Foundation. "Through participation in the Stock Market Game and InvestWrite, Elizabeth has acquired insights and gained confidence to embrace financial opportunities, research and make informed financial life decisions, and achieve better financial life outcomes."
Jim Morris, CEO of the SC Council on Economic Education, joined Dr. Susan Owens's Financial Algebra class to present award. "We honor and congratulation Elizabeth and her teacher, Susan Owens," Morris said. "By making economics fun, interesting and relevant through The Stock Market Game and InvestWrite, we can help fulfill our mission for South Carolina students to leave high school with a sound foundation in economic principles, an understanding of our economy and how it works, and a strong appreciation for th American free enterprise system."
