SDS Celebrates Student Achievement At Spirit Of The Griffin Assembly
Spartanburg Day School recognized students and members of its school community during the annual Spirit of the Griffin Assembly, led by Head of School Dave Skeen, on Wednesday, April 22.
The assembly highlights individuals who exemplify the values of the school through their character, contributions, and daily actions. At the center of the program are the Spirit of the Griffin Awards, which honor students for their personal character, service to the school, commitment to their academic work, and the pride and respect they show for the campus.
This year’s Spirit of the Griffin Award recipients were:
Lower School: Ellie Mier and Julia Patterson
Middle School: Madeline Saleski and Sammy Crain
Upper School: Sarah Halstead and Murphy Garrett
In addition to the Spirit of the Griffin Awards, several other recognitions were presented during the assembly.
Hannah Vincent received the Ben Stone Award, which honors a student who demonstrates selflessness, courage, and a commitment to serving others. John Burgess was presented with the Griffin Wings Award, recognizing an individual who uplifts and positively impacts the school community.
Poppy Dawson was also recognized for her achievement as the Varsity Girls Golf Individual State Champion and received her state championship ring.
The assembly also included the announcement of this year’s Delta Dedications. Delta, Spartanburg Day School’s yearbook, will be dedicated to Kim Ballenger (4K faculty) and Dr. Chris Duncan (Upper School math faculty) in recognition of their lasting contributions to the school.
The Spirit of the Griffin Assembly remains one of Spartanburg Day School’s most meaningful traditions, bringing together students, faculty, and staff to celebrate the individuals who help shape the culture and values of the school.
Each year the Board of Trustees recognizes outstanding Spartanburg Day School students by the presentation of the Spirit of the Griffin Award, a tradition that has been celebrated since 1993.
