Tuesday's Spirit of the Griffin assembly once again honored individuals representing the essence of what makes Spartanburg Day School great. The awards, established by the board of trustees in 1993, are given once each year to students in all three divisions.
Head of School Rachel Deems commented that "Today is a day to reflect and be grateful; a day to celebrate the extraordinary opportunities, life-long relationships and to know first hand what it means to be more when you are a Spartanburg Day School Griffin."

Award recipients exemplify placing others before self, courage in the face of adversity, dedication to serving the community and loyalty to Spartanburg Day School.

Michael R. Johnson Endowed Scholarship: Sara McCown & Trinity Chapman
Presented to a student or students who have exhibited strong academic ability and who contribute to the extra-curricular life of the Spartanburg Day School or the Spartanburg community at large.
Griffin Wings Award: Bev Whitmire
Honors a member of the Spartanburg Day School community who on a daily basis by word, deed, and attitude, consistently exemplifies the soaring spirit associated with a Griffin. The Award is entitled the Griffin Wings to signify the individual's contribution in being an uplifting presence, a source of joy, and an example to all of how to approach others.
