Augusta, G.A. - The Spartanburg Day School varsity swim teams competed at the SCISA State Championships on Saturday.
The girls' team won the SCISA State Championship for the fifth year in a row.
With a team score of 137 points, the Griffins beat Hilton Head Head Christian Academy, which finished second with 127 points. In the final event of the day for the girls SCISA A-AA competition, the 400 yard freestyle relay team of Emily Cobourn, Sarah Griffin, Susannah Lyon and Camrynn Wilson finished first to claim the individual state championship and sealed the overall victory for Spartanburg Day School.
"They had to work hard for this one," said Coach Ashli Gaines. "All their hard work has paid off." This was Coach Ashli Gaines' third State Championship after taking over in the summer of 2015.
The boys' team with a score of 115 finished third overall. Freshman Ligon Chewning won an individual state championship in the 500 yard freestyle. Chewning dominated this event, winning by nearly 10 seconds.
