The Griffins' No. 12, and the nation's No. 2 player, Zion Williamson, announced Saturday he will be attending Duke University in the fall. The announcement, held in the Stone Gymnasium, was televised nationally and broadcast live by ESPN.
The choice ended months of speculation regarding Zion's college path. During an interview with SportsCenter immediately following the announcement, the student-athlete said it was the "brotherhood" and legendary "Coach K" that swayed his decision.
Before pulling a Blue Devils hat out of a bookbag, Zion thanked God, his family, his teammates, his coach, his fans and to Head of School Rachel Deems, his "biggest cheerleader."
He also extended thanks ,"to Spartanburg Day School for providing the platform for academic and athletic excellence and supporting me as I chase my dreams."
Athletic Director Rita Harrell said that for two years, Zion's talents have put the national spotlight on Spartanburg Day School, showcasing not only strong athletics but a standout academic program.
"Zion has proved nationally that a player can attend a college prep high school and make it big on the athletic stage," Harrell said. "I know that all of our younger athletes who look up to Zion know that they can have the best of both worlds."
