Q&A with Arden Harley
Q: What are some of your most cherished memories from your time at Spartanburg Day School?
A:My favorite memories at SDS always revolve around dodgeball, whether it's during field day, game night, PE class, or the Annual “Where's the Love dodgeball tournament”. Each game is filled with laughter and unforgettable fun. Dodgeball at SDS is different from dodgeball at other schools; we take it to a whole other level. It's practically a signature game at the school, and it's rare for anyone to leave without experiencing the excitement of a few rounds.
Q:How has SDS helped you grow academically and personally?
A:SDS has played a pivotal role in my academic and personal growth, particularly in honing my soft skills, such as communication. Being in such a tight-knit community, where it's normal to chat with teachers and adults every day, has made me feel at ease talking to anyone, anywhere. SDS truly helped me find my voice and confidence, making interactions beyond the school's walls feel like second nature.
Q:What are your plans for after graduation?
A:After graduation, I'm excited to pursue my academic journey at the University of Georgia.
Q:How did your experiences at SDS prepare you for your next chapter?
A:At SDS, I was treated with the same respect and responsibility as an adult, which has truly fostered my independence. I could freely navigate the halls, attend to my needs, and engage in conversations as an equal, not as someone lesser. The enormous trust and responsibility placed on me at such a young age have prepared me immensely for the next step. I feel completely ready to transition to living on my own, attending school in a different environment, and tackling whatever challenges come my way with confidence and ease.
Q:What advice would you give to incoming freshmen at Spartanburg Day School?
A:My advice to incoming freshmen at Spartanburg Day School would be to dive in and get involved right from the start. Don't just go through the motions of school; fully experience it. SDS offers a unique environment, so take advantage of it by attending the special events, joining clubs, and participating in sports teams. Get to know the people around you, both peers and teachers, because the close-knit community at SDS provides a rare opportunity to build deep lasting relationships with others. So, make the most of every moment, because these years are meant to be lived fully, not merely endured.
Q:What will you miss most about Spartanburg Day School?
A:The thing I'll miss most about SDS is undoubtedly the people. Growing up alongside my grade and forming bonds with the teachers, it truly feels like a family. Saying goodbye to SDS will feel like bidding farewell to a cherished family member, leaving behind a community that has shaped and supported me throughout my life.
