Q&A with Fort Johnson

Q: What are some of your most cherished memories from your time at Spartanburg Day School?

A:Sitting in Mrs. McGrath’s room during my free time, advisory activities and events such as trunk or treat, and being with my friends in certain classes!

Q: How has SDS helped you grow academically and personally?

A:The Day School has taught me so much academically from subject to subject, but there is a certain distinction between The Day School and other schools that has truly heightened my ability to learn and grow. The Day School taught me how to learn. Through middle and high school, I learned many studying methods, memorization methods, test-taking strategies, organizational skills, and tools to capitalize on my time and lessons. The VISTAS program helped me so much in becoming who I am today as my grades would be nowhere near as good as they are now and I wouldn’t be able to organize apples from oranges. Especially with ADHD and being a full-time procrastinator, I’ve been challenged throughout my years at the day school to make time for work and actually try, and that is something I think is very special about our school that has shaped who I am today.

Q: What are your plans for after graduation?

A:I currently plan to attend Wofford College for a Business degree.

Q: How did your experiences at SDS prepare you for your next chapter?

A:SDS has prepared me for college in many ways such as studying strategies, time management, and organizational skills. I feel very confident in my future as I’ve heard from other SDS graduates such as my sister that The Day School has truly prepared me for success.

Q: What advice would you give to incoming freshmen at Spartanburg Day School?

A:Take advantage of everything the school has to offer! There is a free gym to use after school until around 5 pm, there is a library, the teachers are always willing to help you–even in a subject they don’t teach, and you will have plenty of time during the school day to see whoever you need to see. If you’re having trouble in a certain subject, go see that teacher during MAC period or after school.

Q: What will you miss most about Spartanburg Day School?

A:Absolutely–one hundred percent– the thing I will miss most about The Day School are the teachers. I’ve made such close connections with the teachers at SDS that it's almost mandatory that I come to visit them during my time at college. It's not often that a school is filled with such caring and compassionate people such as the teachers at The Day School and we students are incredibly blessed and gifted to have them. I will probably go on in life to compare every teacher I have in the future to teachers at SDS, and that bar is very high.

Q: What are some of the unique aspects of the Spartanburg Day School experience that you'll take with you?

A:I will always remember all the events and activities that The Day School hosts. From Trunk or Treat to the Turkey Trot, SDS has many fun events that get students involved and together. The people in my advisory are quite close to me after all of the competitions we’ve been through against other advisories. Many experiences that I’ve had at the Day School– like the Halloween celebrations– will stick with me for the rest of my life.

Q: What are some "hidden gems" of Spartanburg Day School that you think future students know about?

A: Many students don’t know about the counseling and therapy options the school has for students. We have a high school counselor right now that if you have anything going on in your life that you need to talk with someone about you can go to them. I hear we are getting more too! Another thing is that if you don’t want to go to a counseling session or do anything too formal and time-consuming, any of the teachers are willing to sit down with you and listen and talk to you about anything that might be bothering you.
