Columbia, S.C.- The Spartanburg Day School girls' varsity team faced Trinity Byrnes in the final of the SCISA 2A State Championship and came so close to winning their first title since the fall of 2011.

In dramatic fashion the result of the match came down to the last doubles game which saw Trinity Byrnes prevail and win the match 5-4.

Spartanburg, S.C.- The varsity girls' tennis team hosted a quarter final match in the SCISA State Championships and defeated Carolina Academy 5-1 to advance into the final four of the competition.

Spartanburg, S.C.- The varsity girls' tennis team lost 6-0 against a strong Christ Church Episcopal team.

The Griffins who were missing their number one player Caroline Simon due to illness were forced to move people up in the order. Freshman Marianna Converse demonstrated her ground strokes at number one but fell short as she went down 6-3, 6-4.

"It was good to get back on the court and compete. It's been a strange time with the weather and having a few games cancelled. We will get back in rhythm and back on track," stated Coach Bob Allsbrook

The Griffins dominated the singles dropping one game as everyone won in two sets to put the result to bed. In the doubles Coach Bob Allsbrook gave some valuable game time to his some of his squad players but Spartanburg Day still managed to win two of the three matches.

Asheville, N.C.- The varsity girls' tennis team got their 2017 season off to a bumpy start as they loss 9-0 against a tough Asheville School team.

The blues depth proved too much for the Griffins as they won every match of the contest. Kelly Killoren a seventh grade student put up a fight at the number 3 singles match. Killoren took a set but lost out in a third set tiebreaker.

The team will look to bounce back when they host Spartanburg Christian Academy in a region match up on Thursday, 31 August. The start time is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

Bob Allsbrook

Coach Bob Allsbrook has been a fixture on the courts and in the gym since the fall of 1987. As a player, he played Division I tennis for Appalachian State and was a Southern Conference Champion. He later played the ATP Tour and was ranked #2 in the U.S. He holds seven National Championship titles and has numerous wins over top 100 ATP players throughout his career. In 2001 he represented the U.S. on the Tony Trabert Cup Team and was ranked #2 in the world at the World Team Championships. On the coaching end, he has instructed three NCAA finalist and an NCAA Champion. He’s also coached the Saint Lucia Davis Cup Team and National Intersectional Team. Coach Allsbrook has been USTA Player Development Coach and USPTR Pro I Level coach. In 2013, he was inducted into the South Carolina Tennis Hall of Fame and the following year into the Spartanburg Day School Hall of Fame. He has coached 13 state championship teams at SDS and been named SCISA Coach of the Year and NCISAA Coach of the Year in previous seasons. Coach Allsbrook enjoys getting to know his student-athletes and their families.
