Spartanburg, S.C.- The Spartanburg Day School varsity basketball teams claimed region titles as both the girls' and boys' teams won their championship games on Tuesday night.
In the first game of the night the girls' varsity team rallied from a 15 point halftime deficit to win the game 54-43 over Spartanburg Christian Academy.
At the beginning of the game the Griffins were in the groove as they led the Warriors 7-2 but after a timeout from SCA's coach Monica Fain, Spartanburg Day struggled offensively which led to a Warriors halftime lead.
The second half was a different story as senior Kathleen Babb led the Griffins comeback as she forced turnovers which led to points for her team.
"Our team wasn't playing up to our potential when running our plays, so I knew something was going to have to happen. I did what I needed to do," said Kathleen Babb.
The Griffins regained the lead in the fourth quarter and never looked back as they won their second straight SCISA Region 1-AA championship.
Babb led the Griffins with 16 points, Lauren Oakes scored 12, junior Brittany Mack added 10 and Lauren Lee 9, Ariana Muehlenbein 5, Mariana Converse 2 rounded out the scoring for the team.
Kathleen Babb, Lauren Oakes, Brittany Mack, Lauren Lee and Ariana Muehlenbein were all named to the All-Region team.
The girls' varsity team will be back in action on Friday, February 16 as they travel to Heathwood Hall to take on Colleton Prep in the first round of the SCISA 2A State Championships. The tip off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
