Greenville, S.C.- The Spartanburg Day School varsity girls' soccer team lost 2-1in heartbreaking fashion against Shannon Forest Christian School.
The Crusaders opened the scoring in the first half and took a 1-0 lead going into the break.
The Griffins fought back in the second half and got back on level terms as they scored through Ash-Kat Harley. Harley raced onto a through ball and volley her shot over the keeper to make it 1-1.
With the game looking certain for overtime the Crusaders scored with the last kick of the game to win the important region game.
The team will be back in action on Friday, April 20 with a home game against Greenwood Christian School. The seniors will be recognized before the game starting at 5:20 p.m.
Spartanburg, S.C.- The Spartanburg Day School varsity girls soccer team were left frustrated as they were defeated by Cambridge Academy 1-0.
The game winner was scored in the first half from 40 yards out to seal the victory for the Cougars.
The Griffins will look to bounce back in region play when they travel to Shannon Forest Christian School next Tuesday, April 17. Kick off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
Spartanburg, S.C.- The Spartanburg Day School girls' varsity soccer team suffered a heavy 10-0 defeat at the hands of the reigning SCISA 2A State Champions Oakbrook Prep.
The Griffins battled hard but couldn't keep the Knights at bay as Oakbrook led 8-0 at the half.
The visiting team added two more goals in the second half to finish the game with ten goals.
The Griffins will be back in action on Wednesday, April 11 as they host Cambridge Academy. The kick off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
Spartanburg, S.C.- The Spartanburg Day School varsity girls' soccer team defeated Spartanburg Christian Academy 4-0.
It was an important region win for the Griffins and improves their overall record to 4-3.
Freshman Hope Moreno got things started with a left footed shot from the top of the area that flew into the bottom corner of the goal. Ash-Kat Harley also a freshman added two goals before halftime to give the Griffins a three goal advantage going into the second half.
Senior captain Lauren Oakes scored in her fourth game in a row to seal the victory for Spartanburg Day.
The Griffins will be back in action on Monday, April 9 when they host Oakbrook Prep. Kick off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
Greenwood, S.C.- The Spartanburg Day School varsity soccer girls defeated Greenwood Christian School 9-0 in a region match Thursday night.
Goals were scored by Ash-Kat Harley (2), Lily Webster (2), Vinnie Webster (2), Hope Moreno (2) and senior captain Lauren Oakes.
The win improves the Griffins record to 3-3 and they will be back in action on Tuesday, March 27 with a home game against Spartanburg Christian Academy. Kick off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Spartanburg, S.C.- The Spartanburg Day School varsity girls' soccer team made it two wins in a row as they defeated Shannon Forest Christian School 3-1.
An early goal by Raegan Cash gave the Griffins the lead after only 10 seconds of action. The Griffins doubled their lead in the 55th minute. Good work by Vinnie Webster and Ash-Kat Harley down the right hand side saw a ball fall to senior Lauren who shot into the corner of the goal.
Oakes scored her second of the night as Ashlin Cash and Raegan Cash combined to set up the forward who smashed a shot into the top of the goal.
The Crusaders got a goal back late on but the Griffins held firm to secure an important region win.
The teams record now stands at 2-3 and they will be back in action on Thursday, March 22 as they travel to Greenwood Christian School. Kick off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
Spartanburg, S.C.- The Spartanburg Day School varsity girls' soccer team got their first win of the season as they defeated Landrum High School 1-0.
Senior Lauren Oakes scored what proved to be the game winning goal in the first half after a delightful through ball by Julia Cooper.
The Griffins will now look to continue their improvement next week as they travel to Shannon Forest Christian School on Tuesday, March 20 to play them in what is going to be a crucial region game. Kick off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
Spartanburg, S.C.- The Spartanburg Day School varsity girls' soccer team were defeated 5-0 against Christ Church Episcopal School.
The Cavaliers started fast with two goals in the first 30 minutes of attacking corners. They made it three with two minutes left in the first half after a player dribbled past the defense and shot into the corner of the goal.
The second half was an improvement for the Griffins but Christ Church still scored two goals and won the game 5-0.
The Griffins record now stands at 0-3 and they will be back in action on Thursday, March 15 with a home game against Landrum High School. The kick off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
Greenwood, S.C.- The Spartanburg Day School varsity girls' soccer team travelled to Greenwood to play Cambridge Academy and were defeated 4-2.
The Cougars attacked the Griffins from the start and went 2-0 up inside the first 10 minutes. Spartanburg Day School got themselves back into the game after a penalty kick was converted by Hope Moreno.
During the second half the Griffins changed their formation and created a host of chances. They got back on level terms after a long throw by Lauren Oakes found Moreno who blasted the ball into the back of the net with her left foot.
Unfortunately Cambridge Academy were not finished as they forced a corner and it was converted on the back post by the forward. Another break down on a corner led to final Cougars goal.
The Griffins will be back in action on Tuesday, March 13 when they host Christ Church Episcopal School. Kick off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
Spartanburg, S.C.- The Spartanburg Day School varsity girls' soccer team opened their season with a 5-0 loss against Byrnes High School.
The Rebels who were already a quarter of the way into their season looked fitter as the Griffins held Byrnes to one goal in the first half. Late in the second half the Rebels fitness told as they scored four more goals to win the game.
The team will be back in action on Thursday, 8 March as they travel to Cambridge Academy to play a region game. Kick off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
Coach Nick Buxton has been the director of soccer at SDS since the summer of 2014. He is the varsity girls’ and middle school boys’ head soccer coach. His experience as a player includes being a member of the Watford Football Club in England and the USC Upstate soccer team. During his time at USC Upstate he was an All-Region and All-Conference player. From 2009-2015 he worked for Carolina FC as a club coach, with children from four years old to 18. He also coached at Landrum High School in 2010 and was the developmental director at CESA Spartanburg for the 2015-16 season. Since 2012, he has been the SC Olympic Development Program coach. In 2015 Coach Buxton was named SCISA All-Region Coach of the Year and was also selected to coach the North-South All-Star game. He likes being able to work with all ages of students at Spartanburg Day School and enjoys watching them learn and develop into better individuals.
