News from the Lower School

Week of October 5

Label with Child’s Name
With our varying weather and temperatures, we are often finding jackets around campus with no names. Please remember to label all articles of clothing such as sweaters and jackets with your child’s name.

Morning Carpool Reminder
Please help us with morning carpool routines each day. We want children ready to hop out of the car once temperature screenings are complete. With face coverings on, seatbelts and car seats unbuckled, backpacks on backs, and School Pass completed, the line will run smoothly.  Thank you for helping your child get ready in this way.

Afternoon Carpool Reminder
Please hold up your carpool tag during afternoon carpool if your tag is not visible in the passenger side windshield. This will help carpool run more efficiently. Thank you so much for your help.

Preschool Corner: Meaningful Math Moments
Math isn’t just about numbers.  It’s also about recognizing patterns, sorting and classifying objects, estimating, measuring, comparing, and sequencing.

Math as Language
The words that your child learns to describe objects are important to mathematical concepts.  Size, shape, and color help in classifying and comparing.  When your child sorts objects into categories, he/she is understanding and using words such as same/different, more/less, lighter/heavier, and bigger/smaller.  These are important concept words in math.

Concrete Experiences
Young children learn by using real objects.  When playing with blocks, your child learns about size, shape, dimension, weight, order, and concepts such as more/less, same/different, and parts/whole.  The child uses numbers and counting, creates patterns, and develops special sense.  Sorting socks, setting the table, and putting away toys use math concepts.

Questions that Count
Asking questions stimulates your child’s thinking and reasoning skills.  Add the phrase “do you think” to questions that start with what, why, where, how, which one, or how many.  Your child will learn ways to problem solve using mathematical concepts.
