The Spartanburg Day School Varsity Girls’ Tennis Team triumphed in SCISA 2A state championship competition, held Friday and Saturday at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter. The team prevailed against Palmetto Christian 5-0 on Saturday, securing its first state championship win since 2011.

Playing in the No. 1 singles match, junior Kelly Killoren defeated her opponent 7-5, 6-3 to secure a straight sets victory. There were also impressive wins for senior Marianna Converse,  junior Maggie Cobb, freshman Carlee Mason and eighth grader Paige Melick. Also contributing to the win was sophomore Carly Garrity who was leading 6-3, 3-2 in her match before the team’s win was secured. Outstandingly, none of the Griffin players lost in individual play throughout the state competition.

The state championship was Coach Bob Allsbrook’s 15th in his career coaching both the varsity girls’ and varsity boys’ teams at SDS.

“The girls’ tennis team had a performance for the record books,” Allsbrook said. “It was the first time in school history where a girls’ or boys’ team won every singles match during the state tournament. I was so impressed with the way the girls handled the pressure and expectations put on them. This team will not soon be forgotten.”
