Gary Clark Receives 2020 Caggiano Memorial Alumni Award

It was an honor to present the 2020 Caggiano Memorial Alumni Award to former coach, teacher and Headmaster Gary Clark and thereby install him as an honorary SDS alumnus. This award is presented during graduation exercises each year to an alum who has distinguished himself or herself on a national or international level, or for one who has made a significant contribution to the life of Spartanburg Day School. Many thanks to Dr. Clark and his wife Merrie for their continued to support of SDS through the years. Pictured with Gary are Rick Dent '65 and Bill Hamilton '79, who presented the award.

ALUMNI COUNCIL GRADUATION LUNCHEON FOR CLASS OF 2020

The SDS Alumni Council hosted its annual graduation luncheon for seniors this year in a different and physically distant way.  In lieu of lunch, seniors were presented with gift cards for their favorite restaurant. Seniors were also given an SDS baseball cap.  These seniors have been such good sports through all the accommodations that have had to be made for their graduation, and we truly admire their resiliency.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

Elizabeth Thomson Becker '00 Running for State Senate of Nevada

It is inspirational to learn of Griffin alumni who care about their communities and hope to improve them. We salute Elizabeth Thomson Becker '00 for running for the Nevada State Senate. When asked how her experience at SDS influenced her, she responded by saying:

"The support I have received from my fellow alumni and former Day School teachers has been overwhelming and touching for me. Truly, I would not be prepared to serve in Nevada's legislature without the guidance and open-minded education I received at SDS. One of my most vivid memories of high school was from Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, 2000, my senior year. I arrived at school fired up about a Confederate flag protest in Columbia that I and several other students wanted to attend. We were encouraged to do so by several teachers, including Mr. Mike Johnson and Dr. Barbara Cobb. 5 or 6 of us piled into one of our parents' minivans (we were all 18 at the time) and drove to Columbia to raise our voices with thousands of other folks to bring down that flag over our statehouse. The flag was not removed until 2015, but working towards positive change takes commitment and, often, time.
Being on the right side of history often isn't popular or easy, and nothing is black and white. I am grateful to the Day School for encouraging free thought, open dialogue, and activism for righteous causes. Today's issues are no less complex than they have ever been. I look forward to being a voice for my constituents and weighing the evidence on each issue to find a solution that does the most good for the most people."
