FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Welcome back everyone! The past three days have been great days to be a Griffin. It is always a bit of a journey through time to walk the halls on the first day of school. The 2-year-olds are spreading their wings to say "goodbye" to mom and dad, Lower School students are greeting beloved teachers and friends, fifth graders are finding their way on new halls, and our seniors are processing into assembly on their last first day at SDS. Thank you to our faculty for preparing opening days that engaged and excited learners of all ages.
And while many long-time Griffins were glad to return, we also enjoyed the valued tradition of welcoming new students and their families. We opened Wednesday with a first day enrollment of 528 students – 448 returning students and 80 new students – an increase over last year's opening of 501. Please take time to reach out to new families and make them feel a part of our school community. Also, share your back-to-school stories with friends as you are an important part of conveying the Day School experience.
I wish you a weekend of rest and reflection on the beginning of a new school year. We will all close out Friday with much gratitude for our school, our dedicated faculty, our students, and our parents. Have a good weekend and see you on Monday! Rachel S. Deems Head of School
