Dear Spartanburg Day School Learning Community,
Yesterday was one of those special days at SDS that beautifully showcased the spirit of our community and the richness of our programs. The morning began with a beloved tradition: the Kindergarten “We Are Readers” parade. With handmade signs proudly declaring “I can read!” and “I love books!”, our newest readers marched through the halls as the entire school lined up to cheer them on. It’s a joyful celebration of a foundational skill and a powerful reminder of what happens when a community rallies around learning. Later that morning, we gathered once more for another cherished tradition—our Senior Parade and banner signing. As our seniors made their way through each division, hugging faculty and friends, tearful and proud parents captured photos and memories, surely wondering how the years flew by so quickly.
That same sense of pride and celebration carried into the evening as we gathered to dedicate the new Valerie M. Barnet Theater. With a powerful performance from Mike Wiley, who spoke to the transformative impact of theater on individuals and communities, we officially launched a space that has long been a dream—and now stands as a vibrant reality. Space matters in education. Our new theater already holds deep meaning for our students, serving as both a stage and a symbol of SDS’s commitment to the arts and to a truly holistic education. That commitment came into sharp focus last night as Mr. Wiley performed and, in the distance, we heard the roar of the crowd from the Varsity Girls’ Soccer field as they defeated Oakbrook in overtime. Even at 7:30 on a Thursday night, our campus was buzzing with life—a clear sign that SDS is a place where energy, passion, and purpose thrive well beyond the school day.
That energy is what lifts our students to meet ever-higher expectations. Space is the vessel that supports our programs, shapes our experiences, and reinforces who we are. We are deeply grateful to the Barnets and to all who made this theater possible, and we look forward to many more moments like last night as our future unfolds.
Don't forget to stop by the SDS tent tonight at the Crit! Have a great weekend!
