We're back!

While the teachers have been on campus for over a week it never feels as though the school year has truly started until the halls are filled with laughter, slamming lockers, and choruses of "We missed you!"

We officially kicked off the school year with the traditional "Last First Day" breakfast and pictures with the seniors. The excitement of beginning their senior year was palpable as they gathered for group pictures, chatted about their summers, and got ready to move into the "senior seats" in the Dent for morning assembly. There is no doubt that Val and Blair will not only lead this class with long held traditions in mind; they will pave the way for new ideas, allowing for the Class of 2025 to make a lasting impact on our school and community.

A big thank you to our support staff, Stacey Brewer, Ann Marie Wesneski, Katie Clayton, Jo McCoy and the jazz band, Bob Allsbrook, and everyone else who helped to make sure that the All School Assembly ran smoothly. There is something incredible about seeing (and hearing!) every part of our school community come together to celebrate the beginning of a new year at SDS. As arms went around shoulders and students began to sway along with the Alma Mater it felt like we were truly here, that we had finally begun our year together.

Ms. Sorrenti asked Upper School students to respond to the statement, “What I am looking forward to most in [9th, 10th, 11th, 12th] grade is…” Each grade level is entering this year from a different perspective: ninth-grade students are looking forward to being in classes with people in different grades, tenth graders are looking forward to starting AP classes, juniors are looking forward to being upperclassmen and a role model to younger students, and our seniors are ready to embrace their last year at SDS with their lifelong friends. While each grade level’s responses were slightly different, there were common themes that appeared: relationships, making memories, and taking classes that they enjoy. The Upper School faculty looks forward to being a part of that journey this year.

Before I wrap up this week's letter please note that students are not allowed to carry their cellphones during the school day. We have asked all students to keep their phones in their lockers, either turned off or on silent. They may check their phones between classes, but should not be texting or receiving calls during class times. If there is an emergency or if you need to reach your student right away, please call the main line and ask for the Upper School.

Jillian and I are sincerely looking forward to supporting the Upper School faculty and students in our new roles. Please feel free to reach out to us at any time with questions.

With gratitude,

Amanda
