News from the Upper School
We’re beginning to settle into the new schedule as we wrap up our first full week of school. The students have found their rhythm and our classes are off to a smooth start. We have enjoyed walking the halls and seeing students actively engaged with their teachers and peers. We cannot help but be reminded how incredible our teachers are and how thoughtful they are in planning and organizing their classes.
Our annual Honor Code signing was held on Wednesday in the Dent. Teachers and students gathered to hear Joan Tobey speak about honor, integrity, and life lessons.
“Every assignment stretches you, makes you think, reinforces a skill, expands your understanding of the material. Some of them do all of those things. That is, if you do the assignment thoughtfully and honestly. As you sign the pledge today, think hard about what you are promising. After today, the pledge will hang on the wall. Check it again whenever you are tempted to violate it and remind yourself what is most important. …. It is up to each of you to maintain that community of trust. … So, think hard, and be proud to be a part of this wonderful place.”
Joan included a very personal and meaningful story from her past as she encouraged students to be mindful and intentional about the Honor Code. Please ask your student about her story and the impact that it had (and continues to have) on her life. We could not imagine a better speaker to share with our students; Joan was an integral part of the Honor Council during her thirty-seven year career at SDS. It was absolutely wonderful to have her here, back at home, talking about a topic near and dear to her heart.
The rest of our week was business as usual, which is exactly what we needed. Things will pick back up next week with our club fair, Interact Food Drive, and college colors day on Friday.
Seniors enjoying a “Senior Sunrise” on Thursday morning.
Senior parents, please don't forget to join us for Parent's Night on Sunday (4pm, in the Dining Commons).
We hope that you have a restful weekend!
