News from the Upper School

Important to note - Special Studies offerings were emailed to students this afternoon. A separate, specific communication gives more detailed information, but I wanted to mention that we have begun the request and assignment process. Please talk with your students as they consider the offered experiences. Feel free to reach out to activity leaders with questions.

The hustle and bustle continues in Upper School. Alongside their days immersed in academics, students invest their time and energy in various meaningful ways. If there's one thing you can count on at SDS, it's a packed calendar. Upper School students are an integral part of day-to-day business, and we are proud of how they step up when needed.

The rundown of the coming days validates the above sentiments. Parents' Community holds their Color Run on Saturday. Interact members will support the event by working stations and volunteering their time to assist however needed. While Griffins of all ages are being doused in colorful powder early tomorrow morning, the SDS XC team will compete in the State Championship meet at Heathwood Hall. Run fast, everyone!

I hope you can join us Tuesday as we hold our annual Halloween festivities. Upper Schoolers have been working hard for quite some time to bring their Trunk-or-Treat plans to life. The competition for the best trunk is shaping up to be pretty fierce, and our youngest Griffins will surely enjoy the show. There's enough candy floating around to keep local dentists busy for years! I have visions of Lower School students zooming around until the inevitable sugar crash gives parents a bit of relief. We extend our sincere thanks to the Parents' Community for their support with candy and supply purchases.

On Wednesday afternoon, students depart to participate in Youth in Government (YIG). Annually, Margaret Sullivan, Tim Fisher, and Amanda McGrath work with students to prepare young delegates for the Conference held in Columbia, SC. This year, there are thirty-three participants:

  • Six pairs of students presenting in the Premier House
  • Five pairs in the Premier Senate
  • Three pairs in the Upper House
  • Two pairs in the Upper Senate

Savannah Jayne Peeler will serve as president pro tempore of the Upper Senate. Good luck, YIGSTERS!

To close, I have shared a few photos to give you a better sense of our week. Below, Mrs. Shepard's Creative Writing class started their poetry unit with a "Haiku Walk." They drew inspiration from traditional haiku form and the changing seasons.

Highlighted at the top of this post are seniors who took time the last two mornings to send treats down the candy chute to preschool students. Who is the tall kid breaking in line in the pic below??

Above, SDS alum Emily Conrad returned to campus to speak with students about her experiences abroad. Emily is the author of The Faithless, which focuses on the American Electoral College. She is working towards her Ph.D. and has traveled home from China to give attention to her thesis. Emily's journey has taken her to many unique places, and we were so glad to have her back at SDS!

Lastly, I'll revisit the top of this message to include an image of today's INTERACT meeting. The packed room is more evidence of how invested your kids are in serving others. Students were meeting to organize their service projects for the next several weeks.

We are looking forward to seeing you for the Trunk-or-Treat fun. Enjoy the weekend!
