Arts

Overview

Exhibits & Performances

Weaving, photography, jazz, dance, opera, and drama are all likely to appear on the schedule of events hosted at the Mildred Harrison Dent Fine Arts Center.

Our program includes visiting artists performing and residencies for all four school divisions, as well as our own students performing original works of music, drama, and comedy for their peers.

Funding from the Mildred Harrison Dent Endowment for the Arts provides more than 25 special events each year. Students of all ages benefit from valuable learning opportunities through visiting artists, traveling exhibits, artists-in-residence programs, and professional performances. This designated funding greatly enriches the daily lives of our students and our school community.

Endowed Faculty Chair

The Mildred H. Dent Chair for the Arts honors Millie Dent’s devotion to the arts and her dedication to the Spartanburg Day School. Made possible by an anonymous gift to the school, the chair seeks to reward and recognize an outstanding member of the SDS art department. The chair is presently being held by Sam Mitchell, coordinator of the Mildred Harrison Dent Fine Arts Center.

The Dent Difference

Focused Spaces, Big Passion

The arts are central to how students learn and grow. This difference is reflected in our belief that creativity, imagination, and problem-solving are key to a life well lived.

The Mildred H. Dent Fine Arts Center is at the heart of this work. The Dent Gallery and studios showcase student and professional exhibitions, while our Valerie M. Barnet Theatre supports performances and large-scale student productions that highlight public speaking. Our Music programs fill our campus from the tiniest voices to the pomp and circumstance of graduation. Through art, theatre, and music, students develop a voice and discover how to collaborate and communicate in academic settings beyond the traditional classroom.

The power of art builds connections and sparks big passion 2K-12th grade.
