Athletics at SDS

The Griffin Way

We believe athletics is an extension of the classroom. That philosophy is at the heart of Spartanburg Day School Athletics, where success is measured by much more than wins and losses. We want our student-athletes to discover what they're capable of, learn how to handle challenges, and understand the responsibility that comes with being part of a team.

Our Teacher-Coach Model plays an important role in that experience. When the same people who teach our students in the classroom are also coaching them on the court or playing field, those relationships take on a deeper meaning. Our coaches get to know their students beyond academics, and our students benefit from having mentors who are invested in their growth throughout the school day.

We believe in competing at a high level and taking pride in what it means to be a Griffin. Winning is something we work toward, but it's not the only measure of success. Years from now, we hope our student-athletes look back on their experiences and remember more than the final scores. We hope they remember the lessons they learned, the relationships they built and how those experiences helped shape the people they've become.

Athletics at SDS

Athletics are an important part of the student experience at Spartanburg Day School, with opportunities to get involved beginning with our Junior Griffin programs and continuing through varsity competition.

Across 39 teams, students can pursue a sport they already love or discover something new. As they grow, so do the opportunities to compete, develop their abilities, and experience what it means to be part of a team. Dedicated coaches challenge student-athletes to improve while helping them navigate setbacks, celebrate successes, and compete with purpose.

Wearing the Griffin red and blue means more than representing a team. It means showing up for your teammates, taking pride in your school, and being part of a community that comes together to support one another.

This is Griffin Athletics.

Team Coaches

Leading The Griffins

The relationships between our coaches and student-athletes extend beyond practices and competition. Through our coach-teacher model, coaches are also part of the classroom experience, allowing them to know students in different ways throughout the school day.

That connection is part of what makes Griffin Athletics different. Our coaches help student-athletes grow as competitors while remaining invested in who they are as students.

39 Teams. One Griffin Community.

From Junior Griffins to Middle School, junior varsity, and varsity competition, SDS offers 39 teams throughout the school year, creating opportunities for students at different ages and levels of experience to get in the game.
