VISTAS:

Academic Support and Learning Success

At Spartanburg Day School, we believe every student is a learner with unique strengths, challenges, and ways of thinking. Understanding how we learn is just as important as what we learn.

VISTAS (Varied Instructional Strategies for Teaching All Students) is not simply a place where students receive support. It is our approach to helping every learner discover how they learn best. While some students receive individualized academic support through VISTAS classes, every student benefits from developing effective learning strategies, strong executive functioning skills, and the confidence to advocate for themselves.

Our team of learning specialists brings expertise in learning differences, executive functioning, and evidence-based instructional practices. We partner with students, families, and teachers to create learning experiences that build confidence, foster independence, and equip students with the skills they need to thrive throughout their educational journey and beyond.

Support That Grows With Every Student

The support provided through VISTAS evolves as students grow, meeting learners where they are while preparing them for each new stage of their education.

  • Lower School

The Lower School years provide the foundation for lifelong learning for students in 4K through 4th grade. VISTAS focuses on identifying and closing gaps in learning while providing individualized support for students with learning differences. Through targeted instruction, students develop essential reading, writing, language, mathematics, and learning skills while developing confidence, resilience, and a positive relationship with learning.
  • Middle School

As students become more independent, VISTAS expands its focus to include executive functioning alongside targeted academic support. Students receiving VISTAS classes attend all core academic subjects and attend small-group VISTAS in lieu of an elective or a study hall. Students develop essential skills such as organization, planning, time management, study strategies, note-taking, self-monitoring, and self-advocacy while receiving support that complements classroom learning, ensures they understand the current assignments and recognizes their individual learning profile.
  • Upper School

In the Upper School, VISTAS prepares students for success beyond Spartanburg Day School. Students continue refining academic skills while developing the executive functioning, independence, confidence, and self-advocacy needed for college, careers, and lifelong learning. Our teachers assist in preparation for daily assignments, long-term assignments, quizzes and tests. They also facilitate accommodation arrangements with the College Board, ACT and colleges. Our goal is for every student to understand how they learn best and leave SDS equipped to achieve their future goals.

A Partner in Every Student's Learning Journey

VISTAS is a resource for the entire Spartanburg Day School community.

Our specialists collaborate closely with classroom teachers to share research-based practices that support diverse learners while helping all students develop stronger learning habits and executive functioning skills. We also partner with families, providing guidance, education, and resources that help parents better understand their child's learning profile and support growth at home.

Together, these partnerships create a culture where students feel known, valued, challenged, and supported throughout every stage of their educational journey.

What VISTAS Represents

Our philosophy is reflected in the values that guide everything we do.
