Kim Ballenger

Four Decades of Shaping Young Lives

Kim Ballenger's story with Spartanburg Day School began in 1985, fresh out of college, when she started teaching 4K in a little white cottage across from Drayton Mill. Her mother taught 5K down the street in another house, while the rest of the Lower School occupied a huge brick house nearby. It was a different time, a different place—but Miss Kim never left.
"I guess I can say I've been here almost my whole life," Kim reflects. "40+ years talking to 4-year-olds!"
When the Lower School was eventually built and everyone moved to campus, Miss Kim brought a piece of that history with her—the bathtub from the original 4K cottage still sits in her classroom today, a tangible reminder of where it all began.

Both of Kim's children, Hudson and Noah, graduated from Spartanburg Day School. She's watched generations of students grow up and seen many of her former 4K students walk across the graduation stage. She now teaches the children of her former students, creating a beautiful legacy that spans generations.

Kim Ballenger is a master teacher in every sense of the word. She builds close, meaningful relationships with her students that create an environment where learning is fun, developmentally appropriate, creative, joyful, and challenging all at once. Just recently, five middle school boys—former students—stopped by her classroom to say hi and give her a hug. Those moments tell you everything you need to know about Miss Kim's lasting impact.

She serves as a mentor and invaluable resource to the entire preschool team, sharing the wisdom that comes from four decades of experience. Whether she's working one-on-one with a student, captivating small groups, commanding the attention of an entire class with her voice, or getting down on the floor to act out fairy tale stories, Miss Kim meets children exactly where they are.

Kim created our 4K curriculum and continues to strengthen and adapt it year after year, ensuring it remains responsive to the needs of each new generation of learners. Her dedication to excellence and her genuine love for teaching 4-year-olds has shaped the foundation of countless educational journeys.
